Join us for "ABA 101 - What is ABA?", a workshop designed for parents and caregivers to gain a foundational understanding of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). This session will provide an overview of ABA concepts and strategies used in behavioural intervention. Participants will learn about the functions of behaviour, the importance of positive reinforcement, and effective strategies to address challenging behaviours based on their functions.

During the workshop, we will explore:

Embark on an epic journey in our 4-week Dungeons & Dragons group, designed specifically for teens aged 13-17 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and registered with the Ontario Autism Program (OAP). This immersive, fantasy role-playing game offers a unique opportunity to explore diverse worlds—be it medieval, outer space, or dystopian—as a fantasy character of your choice, such as an Elf, Barbarian, Orc, or Halfling.

Guided by a Dungeon Master, you and your teammates will work together as a 'party' to complete quests, missions, and adventures. Whether you're overcoming an evil three-headed being, fighting to save humanity from brain-harvesting aliens, enjoying a homecooked meal in a local tavern, or solving the mystery of the missing scroll, the choices and adventures are endless. Your fate is left in the hands of the dice!

Players do not need to bring anything to join, but are welcome to bring their own dice and/or character sheets if they have them. This group is a fantastic way for teens to develop social skills, teamwork, and creativity in a supportive and engaging environment.

Upon arrival, an Autism Services representative will meet with you, introduce themselves, and show your teen into the building. We look forward to embarking on this adventure with you!

Being a sibling to someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be a unique journey filled with special experiences, feelings, and moments of learning. That's why Canopy Support Services is hosting a special Sibling Social event just for you! This evening is designed to provide a supportive and fun environment where siblings of children with ASD can connect, learn, and focus on themselves.

During this event, you'll have the opportunity to:

• Learn About Autism: Gain a better understanding of your sibling's condition.

• Support Your Sibling: Discover ways to support your sibling while taking care of your own feelings.

• Self-Care Activities: Enjoy activities that help you recharge and have fun.

• Share Experiences: Connect with other siblings, share your experiences, and feel understood.

• Drop-Off Instructions: Parents should park in the upper parking lot, proceed towards the main doors where an Autism Services representative will greet you, introduce themselves, and guide your child into the building.

• Parent Options: Parents are welcome to wait in the waiting room or a quiet space within Canopy, or drop off their children for an hour.

Join the team at Canopy Support Services for an engaging and interactive social skills group designed specifically for children aged 6-12 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This in-person event will take place at our Cobourg office, providing a safe and supportive environment for your child to learn and grow.

During this one-hour session, your child will have the opportunity to interact with peers, play games, and develop essential social skills such as conversation techniques, sharing, and tolerating others. Our experienced staff will guide the activities, ensuring each child feels included and supported.

Important Details:

• Eligibility: This group is for children aged 6-12 with a diagnosis of ASD who are registered with the Ontario Autism Program (OAP).

• Location: The event will be held at 975 Elgin Street West, Cobourg. Parents should park in the designated parking lot and proceed to the main doors labeled "The Offices of 975 Elgin Street." An Autism Services representative will greet you and your child, introduce themselves, and guide your child into the building.

• Capacity: The group is limited to a maximum of 8 participants to ensure personalized attention and a comfortable environment for all attendees.

• Virtual Job Site: Teens will step into a virtual world where they can experience 31 different job opportunities. From construction to healthcare, the possibilities are endless! 🚀

• Hands-On Experience: Each participant will have 30 minutes to immerse themselves in the VR career opportunities, gaining valuable insights into potential job paths. 👷‍♂️👩‍💼

Managing Anxiety

Learn how to manage anxiety as a family in our virtual event!

Have you or your child ever experienced anxiety? Do you feel your child’s anxiety impacts your family’s quality of life? If so, join us at Canopy Support Services for an insightful workshop on managing anxiety.

This workshop is specifically designed for parents of children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We will discuss what anxiety looks like, share strategies to help manage both your and your child’s anxiety, and provide tools to decrease anxiety in the future.

Workshop Highlights:

• Understanding anxiety and its impact on children with ASD

• Practical strategies for managing anxiety

Come hang out with other teens!

Please join the team at Canopy Support Services for a teen chill and chat! This is an opportunity for your teen to come and connect with other teens, while we practice our social skills. There will be a variety of games, activities, and opportunities to chat with other teens. PIZZA will also be provided!

This group is designed for children aged 12-17 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum disorder, who are registered with the Ontario Autism Program (OAP). Please note, an OAP number is required for all in-person events.

This group will be offered IN PERSON. This group will be held at our Cobourg office at 975 Elgin Street West. Come join other Dads/Father Figures for a fun evening of bowling at Lakeview Bowl!

The staff at Canopy Support Services have booked a lane or two for the Dad's to have an evening out together. Please meet at Lakeview Bowl, where an Autism Services staff member will greet you, and the bowling will begin.

This event is for Dad's only, and not for children/youth to attend.

Please note: An OAP number is required for registration to this in person event and you must have a child with an Autism Diagnosis between 0-17 years of age.

Note: This supportive workshop is for siblings of children with ASD, and not for children/youth with ASD themselves. There is a teen winter craft event happening at the same time as this sibling social!

Need Help Submitting your Canopy Expenses to Access OAP? We can help!

This event is for parents/caregivers of children and youth enrolled in the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) who are accessing Core Clinical Services and need help submitting their receipts to their OAP portal.

This drop in session is available for parents and caregivers who either need help uploading their receipts to the Access OAP family portal or have questions about their portal. This also provides parents/caregivers with the opportunity to ask Canopy's Social Worker or Family Support Coordinator any questions that they would like to ask. Use of technology is available.

Please note: An OAP number is required for this event.

Coffee Chat for Peterborough Caregivers

Join the staff at Canopy Support Services for a Coffee Chat!

This event is for parents and caregivers of children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Please join us for a coffee social event where parents can share information with each other, chat about difficulties that their child/children are having, provide support and guidance to one another, and socialize! There are opportunities to discuss changes to the Ontario Autism Program, and services at Canopy if families are interested. Otherwise, it is a casual and supportive group where parents and caregivers can share with one another.

Please note: An OAP number is required for all in-person events.

This session will take place at the Canopy office located in Peterborough.
