At Canopy Support Services, we empower individuals to overcome barriers and live their best lives. Our primary service area extends across five regions – Northumberland, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Durham, and Haliburton – and is expanding virtually and physically to reach new areas. We work with individuals of all ages to support them in different stages of their lives.

Taking an individualized approach, we recognize that everyone’s abilities and circumstances are unique, and that they require different supports or solutions to achieve their best quality of life. Our staff work together as a team. Through creativity, strong communication, and collaboration, they empower and inspire confidence in those we serve. We are a capacity-building organization. Our History
The Adult Protective Services program funded by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services since 1974 was sponsored by several agencies in Victoria and Haliburton Counties and in Peterborough County by the City of Peterborough’s Social Services Department. In 1988 these programs were amalgamated as a non-profit agency governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Tri-County Adult Protective Services was incorporated on January 24, 1990.
Tri-County Community Behavioural Services funded by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services since 1975 was sponsored by Trent University until 1998. In 1998, Tri-County Behavioural Services and Tri-County Adult Protective Services were amalgamated. On February 24, 1998, under supplementary letters patent by resolution of the Directors/members of the amalgamated corporation the name of the organization was changed to Tri-County Community Support Services.
On April 1, 2000, Tri-County Community Support Services was registered as a charity and designated as a Charitable Organization.
In November 2020, Tri-County Community Support Services rebranded and became Canopy Support Services.
Many of our services are funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) which are free of charge to individuals, families, and agencies. In 2019, we began transitioning our Autism services to a fee-for-service model in response to Government changes to the Ontario Autism Program, and are expanding to offer a variety of other services to meet the needs of people in our communities.
Canopy Support Services have created a culture of continuous improvement that goes beyond compliance – it simply becomes a part of what we do every day.
Canopy Support Services is a FOCUS Accredited Agency, an Authorized Continuing Education Provider Organization for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, and is in compliance with Ontario Quality Assurance Measures for adults with developmental disabilities.
In April 2024, Canopy Support Services partnered with United Way Northumberland by making our Period Promise. All Canopy offices and public spaces are now stocked with free, accessible period products to help support our Canopy Individuals and their families.
Did you know?! Half of all people who menstruate say that they have struggled to purchase products for themselves at some time in their life, and more than a quarter have gone through a period without having any products to support them.
United Way Northumberland has provided over 50,000 menstrual hygiene products to our local community through their PERIOD PROMISE campaign.
In November 2024, Canopy Support Services proudly received an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Seed Grant to address housing instability among Individuals with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities. This funding will support a pilot project to hire a housing support worker, a critical resource that will empower Canopy to better serve our community members across multiple programs.
