“We are extremely excited to expand the new Autism Services clinic in the Northumberland area to address a service-gap and to bring autism services closer to home.”

— Himanshu Shah, Chief Executive Office

Canopy Support Services has been instrumental in supporting my child to develop more meaningful social interactions. Henry was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder when he was 3 years old -  at the age of 7 Henry struggled to have conversation and be able to make connections with his peers.

After attending the Friendship class at Canopy we noticed a meaningful difference.  Henry felt more confident in participating in school and started approaching his peers to engage in conversation.  This change was even noted on his most recent report card from school: Henry “actively engages in our classroom discussion especially about animals or any topic related to science…”.

Attending the friendship class allowed Henry to develop skills to engage other children and to practice these skills in a safe space. Thank you to the entire team at Canopy for making a very real difference in our child’s life!

Caregiver Mediated Early Years (CMEY)

Young children with ASD are most successful at meeting their individual goals when parents and caregivers have the confidence and ability to help them work towards developmental milestones. Through CMEY, our Autism Services staff teach parents and caregivers play-based, child-led therapeutic strategies that will help their child develop social, communication, emotional, play, and adaptive skills to enable them to participate in valued family activities.

We offer the following Caregiver-Mediated Early Years Programs:

Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, and Transactional Supports (ESI/SCERTS)

Using instruction, modeling, practice, and feedback, this intensive, evidence-based program helps parents learn strategies to support their child build social, communication, and emotional regulation skills through valued daily family routines.

Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT)

This child and family-centered intervention capitalizes on a child’s interests and initiations in everyday environments to teach caregivers strategies to support the development of communication, language, play, and social behaviors. PRT is incorporated into the child’s day-to-day interactions with family members, peers, teachers and other professionals. Applied across a family’s daily routine, these therapeutic strategies create a strong foundation for parents to increase their child’s motivation to learn to communicate, engage and initiate social interaction.

To learn more about this OAP support, please visit the OAP CMEY website.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for CMEY Programs, individuals must be:

  • 12 – 48 months old

  • Currently living in Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland or Haliburton
